Educating Leaders for Malawi’s Bright Future

Derek Mzima

Principal, Victory Christian School

Year of Appointment: 2008

DOB: April 15, 1984

Marital Status: Married

I was born and raised as the only child in a Christian family. Things did not go well and when I was in grade 3, both my parents died. As a young boy there was no hope because now I had to grow up under the care of my grandparents who were old and depending on village farming for a living. Education was to be a huge barrier for both my grandparents and myself. I started attending a village school, which had an average of 1 : 60+ teacher pupil ratio and we had inadequate teaching and learning materials.

About one year later, a turn for the better came into my life. I was admitted into an orphanage, “Victory Christian Children’s Home”. This was indeed the “U turn” of things. I no longer belonged to the village! I was enrolled in a better school and received every necessity children with parents receive. Most of all, I received Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior.

In 2002, I had an opportunity to graduate from Victory Christian School, a nationally respected private school. In 2007, I graduated from African Bible College, another institution with a high reputation with other campuses in different parts of Africa. There I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a minor in Biblical Theology. I had the opportunity to take other courses such as: Psychology, Leadership, Christian Education for Youth and Adults, Conflict Management and Resolution. I am now working toward my Doctorate Degree.

In June 2007, the college sent me to the Peninsula Covenant Church in California, USA, to do an internship. I returned in December 2007, and was immediately offered a job at my home, Victory Christian Children’s Home, no longer a child, but as an adult leader.

As the Principal of Victory Christian School, I have been appointed to different positions in the private sector. Had it not been for the education and training I received from “VCCH” all of this would have been impossible.

Every time I reminisce, looking back and into the future, I see how God has mightily blessed my life through Victory Christian Children’s Home. I have reached a position of becoming a leader through the Ministry.

My favorite Biblical verse is Psalm 118:13, “I was pushed back and about to fall, but the Lord helped me” (NIV). My desire is for God to continue blessing VCCH so that many other brothers and sisters who are in need due to the loss of their parents, primarily due to the AIDS/HIV pandemic, would be reached and discipled to become the real leaders in Malawi and beyond.
